INNER PICTURE: IN COLLABORATION WITH ORLEANS HOUSE GALLERY
23 October 2004 - 16 January 2005

National Portrait Gallery

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund

Inner Picture, an exhibition developed with Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham, marks the beginning of a new National Portrait Gallery educational initiative called Reaching Out, Drawing In. Young people from Richmond upon Thames Positive Activities for Young People (PAYP) holiday scheme and Hounslow Pupil Referral Service (PRS) worked alongside artists Madeleine Conn and Will Bishop-Stephens to create their own artwork interpreting and responding to portraits from the collection. Their work and the portraits that inspired them are on display in the Studio Gallery from 23 October 2004, and the display will be formally opened by Rt Hon Estelle Morris MP, Minister for the Arts, at a reception on 21 October 2004.

Highlights include a 3-dimensional installation relating to explorer Robert Falcon Scott, created by Josh Lindell from Hounslow PRS who says "I never thought I was any good at art, I have proved to myself that I can do it". Young people from Richmond PAYP have been creating an animation, lending their voices to portraits such as Elizabeth I, Catherine Parr and Richard Hillary. The animation will concentrate on what the portraits might get up to after the Gallery closes if they could come to life.

Reaching Out, Drawing In is a key part of the National Portrait Gallery's educational and outreach work over the next three years. The project will enable the Gallery to undertake a sustained programme of new audience development and to give wider access to the Gallery's collections. In particular the project aims to engage non-user groups including young people, disabled people and minority ethnic groups. Using a series of six exhibitions in the Studio Gallery as a focus, each of the displays will arise directly out of working with community groups and organisations. The displays will be accessible and promoted to all visitors to the Gallery. Future exhibitions will include working with family learning groups from Haringey and young people on a self-portrait exhibition. Reaching Out, Drawing In has been made possible by the generosity of the Heritage Lottery Fund which has supported the project with a grant
of £312, 500.

Sue Bowers, Heritage Lottery Fund Regional Manager for London said: "We were delighted to be supporting the Reaching Out, Drawing In project because it is giving a wide range of people the opportunity to discover and interact with the rich artistic heritage in the National Portrait Gallery. 'This first exhibition will recognise the fantastic artistic work of the young people involved with Inner Picture. I would encourage as many people as possible to visit the gallery."

Following on from the National Portrait Gallery exhibition, Inner Picture will go on display at Orleans House Gallery, Twickenham from 22 January - 24 April 2005.

CAN YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
CSV Make a Difference Day
Saturday 30 October 2004

CSV Make a Difference Day is on Saturday 30 October 2004 and is your chance to help out in your community. Can you organise or get involved in an interesting event for young people?

CSV MD Day is the UK's biggest day of direct volunteering, with nearly 88,000 volunteers helping over 4,500 projects in 2003. Across the UK, volunteers renovated children's hospices, transformed women's refuge centres, organised museum trips for children and the elderly, cleared rubbish off the streets and brightened homes for older people. This year they expect 97,000 people to take part in over 5,000 activities on (or around) the 30th of October. The focus is on time rather than money, so they do not ask for any financial contribution.

For young people, taking part in the UK's biggest day of volunteering is a chance to:

  • Change things for the better
  • Learn new skills
  • Make new friends and have a laugh

Opening the Doors is looking for individuals who can organise or participate in museum-based youth work. When you register your CSV MD Day activity, you will receive a free Action Pack full of everything needed to organise your event: a T-shirt or tabard, balloons, stickers, posters, a badge, a pen, chocolate and a certificate of achievement. They will also promote your activity on the CSV Make a Difference Day website so that young people can see what you are doing.
