OPENING THE DOORS

Opening the Doors is a three-year programme of work that involved six museums around the country. The project has now come to an end. Its main aim was to find ways of encouraging young people, outside of formal education, to visit museums and galleries and use the resources they offer.

The project sought to address how young people can become more involved in museums and galleries. We aim to establish how young people can use museums as a resource for self-directed learning, training and work experience, and how museums can work with other agencies in order to provide greater opportunities for disadvantaged and vulnerable young people.

Opening the Doors was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Partner organisations were Artswork, a youth arts development agency, and the Museums Association. We received further funding by the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales for the seminars, training workshops, publications and conference.
